I actually took offense to part of the book where the husband and wife both work full time jobs and both had a hard day and there she is cooking dinner for her husband - as expected. Then we are told that this couple has a strict rule that they are each allowed only 30 minutes of complaining time and that's it. Oh, but Joe is such a selfless soul that on this particular night he allowed his wife to complain past the 30 minute mark and she got up early the next morning and wrote him a sappy note about how wonderful he is, and that all her problems are solved because he allowed her to vent more than her allotted 30 minutes of time, and how she was letting him sleep in because he deserved it.

According to the authors, the marriage was completely transformed all because of the noble way Joe listened to his wife bitch. This book is so tedious and awful that I'm getting worked up just writing this review, so I'm going to stop. I read The Go-Giver. And I liked it. It seems I have always had a semi-jaded mindset when it came to business and for-profits; at least, for the duration of my working career so far. How can I not when I've seen my share of businesspeople who only care about what they can get from you and how they'll benefit?

Would Never in a million years could I picture myself reading AND enjoying a self-help business-related book that my Australian co-worker would call "how very typically American.

Wouldn't you be jaded if it seemed that a majority of people you meet at conferences or meetings were inauthentic? Perhaps it's because I am volunteering for a non-profit an NGO, to be exact in another country Cambodia and, while I think it may be unique to this organization, the experiences I've had engaging with people passionate about social justice and making the world a better place.

All of that said, The Go-Giver is a really nice illustration, while wholly fictional, of what business could be if individuals were truly authentic and focused on real relationships with others. My hope is that these concepts can actually be applied to the for-profit world; that it isn't just in non-profit where people are willing to give and help others.

This book was easy to read and easy to process, and I recommend it to people who are ready to change or ready for a change in their own mindset when it comes to business and networking.

Nov 30, Judith Symonds rated it it was amazing. I loved the Go-Giver. It is a really short and simple book and there is an interesting story line. For me the main thing that came up for me when I read this book was that the value that is added is me. I am slowly beginning to recognise all the little things about me that I have hid for so long are the things that I have to share. I also liked the way that the authors challenge the reader to try to apply each of the laws that very same day and so I read this book over 1 week and I saved the new I loved the Go-Giver.

I also liked the way that the authors challenge the reader to try to apply each of the laws that very same day and so I read this book over 1 week and I saved the new laws for each day. I really looked forward to reading each day what the law would be and I also worked hard on that day to apply that law. Although this is a 'business' book, I found that the laws apply to every part of human endeavor. I really am beginning to see that a very small change in my thinking is having a very big change in the joy and love that I get from life these days and that is just beautiful.

This is one of the most valuable books I have ever read. The lessons that are shared through the storytelling are phenomenal. I have to say that there was a lot of validation I found in the book as well. It was well narrated, well assembled, and just an overall great piece of work. This is a book that I will highly recommend to anyone. And I'm going to buy the hardcover copy to keep visibly on my bookshelf. It's that important of a read for me.

Mar 20, Carrie rated it really liked it. I think the subtitle of this book is misleading. I found this book to be just as pertinent to life pratices, as I did business endeavors. This is a very enjoyable read with great characters. Jan 29, Regina Scarborough rated it it was amazing. This book is like another way of looking at the golden rule but it's quick read about how focusing on investing in others can help you achieve you goals.

I desired to read another book, but could not get it in time so I read this one, and it sure met my expectations on a book that has valuable secrets for both business and life when it comes time. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the audio book. Feb 22, Adria rated it really liked it. The only reason I don't give it a 5 star rating is because it isn't based on a true story. I had thought it was and then my husband who also read it did some research and finding that out it took that 1 star away for me.

Otherwise it is an extremely good book to read! Mar 04, Rommel rated it really liked it Shelves: The world is full of people who want to be "go-getters. It seems logical because if you don't go out there and be a go-getter, you won't likely become somebody important.

Interestingly, this book goes against that common sense. Instead of being a go-getter, the book tells a story of how being a go-giver instead can help a person succeed in various areas in his or her life. You can finish the book in one day, even. However, the key points given there are best absorbed and practiced first.

In a sense, it is better than giving examples because the reader can experience for him- or herself what it's like, rather than just accepting the words and principles as real.

However, because it is a very light read, it can give some people the idea that it is not serious.

The Go-Giver: A Little Story About a Powerful Business Idea by Bob Burg

After all, business and leadership books should be written in a "serious" and "professional" manner if they are to be taken seriously. But stories have a way of flowing easily into the subconscious far more than non-fiction. Anyone who has read a novel and a physics or calculus book can tell the difference.

Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people's interests first. The book is structured as a simple, fictional week where the protagonist Joe goes through the process of learning these five laws, almost accidentally, when his personal struggles to meet his quarterly sales quota forces him into a corner.

Joe contacts a successful businessman in the hopes of making a sale, but ends up being tutored by him instead. The Go-Giver is an enjoyable quick read, albeit simplistic and slightly patronizing. Its principles can definitely inspire a more circumspect approach to interacting with others.
